On the title. The moonstone is also called the woman’s stone; its shimmer changes with the light that falls on it. That is why, in the film, it shows no future but a possible one. The dog that never leaves her side gives the story its tone of a fable.

Shot in 2011; the first version screened in New York. The 2024 Redux is newly edited, with footage from that shoot that was never in the film. What the nightingale’s song sets off in the boy was deliberately left invisible in 2011; now it is a sequence of its own.

Method

Drag the sliders

I shoot. And where shooting ends, I keep going.

An image is a matter of layers. Most of them come out of the camera. When one is missing that cannot be filmed, I build it and lay it over the real footage through a mask.

Some shots are filmed entirely, some built entirely, most lie in between. What a shot needs is decided by the story, not by the cheapest method. That is the difference between a tool and a shortcut.

Two shots from The Moonstone. Drag the sliders:

Out of camera Finished
The final shot, built from three original takes. All from the same locked-off camera: one with the window only, one with the woman walking into frame and sitting down, from which she was cut out. Behind her, instead of the snowed-in town, the sea. The orange on her shoulder is not a colour correction. On the shoot the light hung outside the frame, so that the sunset that did not exist yet was already falling on her.
Out of camera After grading
The same principle holds for colour. From the fashion shoot that led to The Moonstone; this shot is in the film. On the left as it came out of the camera, on the right after grading. The same frame, the same hand.
Camera car, 2011A RED on suction cups and lashing straps, for a travelling shot through the windscreen.

Commissioned work

Work for companies, musicians and institutions

A corporate film that tells no story is forgotten after twenty seconds.

A list of merits, a drone shot, music underneath: technically clean and impossible to remember. What stays with people is a story, and building one is a screenwriter’s work.

That is my profession. I write and direct my own films, which screen at festivals, three times awarded for direction. The same work went into the commissioned pieces on this page: the story first, then the camera. They were edited and graded by the same hand.

SonnenwendeFashion film, own production · stills from the original footage · drag the row

One shooting day, two deliveries.

Anyone who shoots a fashion film ends up with tens of thousands of single frames. Most of them are movement, a few are photographs. I shoot in 4.6K, that is 4608 × 2592 pixels, and pull the stills from the original footage at full resolution, not from an exported version. The portrait format is cut out at full image height, without enlargement. Film and photo series come into being side by side, in the same hour, in the same light.

The colour is graded, not filtered. What you see here is late backlight, passed through the same hand as the film. That is why the series and the moving image hold together when the campaign later sits side by side on a website, in social media and in print.

A still from a film looks different from a photograph, and the reason is simple. At 25 frames per second the shutter usually sits at 1/50 of a second, so that movement flows instead of stuttering; depending on the speed in frame and the effect wanted, it is set shorter or longer. Hair in the wind then draws a trail, the light runs softly into the aperture. The image still carries the movement it came from. For a series meant to breathe, that is exactly right.

Sometimes a campaign needs the opposite: 1/500 or shorter, every sequin frozen, every seam visible. A film frame does not do that, and it is not meant to. This is a decision about visual language, and it is made before the shoot, not after.

For a website, social media and a lookbook, what falls out of the movement is enough, with room to spare. Where a full magazine page is needed, a cover, or exactly that sharpness, a separate photo camera stands on the same set, with the same lighting and the same grading. One set, one light, two visual languages.

Film

Corporate film, advertising, music video, portrait. On these pieces, concept, camera, editing, colour and VFX were in one hand.

Moving images without a shoot

Layers that cannot be filmed: animals, places and times that no longer exist. How that is made is shown under Method.

Post-production

Editing, colour, compositing, delivery. Footage that did not come out of my camera takes the same path.

Photography

Product, portrait, location, out of the same visual language as the film. The series above was made on the shooting day of the fashion film.

Social

Vertical and short, planned into the shoot and filmed separately, instead of being cut out of the finished film afterwards.

Website

Design and build in one. The page you are on was built by hand, without a website builder. It is the work sample itself.

On colour. Grading happens on a monitor calibrated to Rec.709, not on whichever screen happens to be standing there. The colour is thereby set against a standard. That is what makes a film’s colours hold up everywhere and not only on my own screen.

About

Michael Müller

In my recent films and current projects I retell old stories. The Moonstone comes from the Brothers Grimm, Nightingale from Oscar Wilde, Heavenly Crush from a biblical parable; Nek Tar is a fable with no moral at the end. Four films, the same work: take an inherited form and turn it on a question of today.

Alongside that I work on commission. Not as a sideline, but because the same hand does all of it: one keeps the craft sharp, the other pays for the independence in which I develop my own material.
